Prime Your Brain for Memorization

Today, I will share a method I've used for memorizing any Surah in the Quran.
The idea is inspired by a technique called priming, often used in painting.
What is priming?
This process involves applying a special primer, which serves as a base coat, to the wall surface before adding the final paint color.
There are a few reasons for priming a wall:
Better Adhesion: Primer helps the paint stick better to the wall, so it doesn't peel off or chip easily.
Even Surface: It evens out the surface of the wall, filling in any tiny cracks or imperfections, so the paint goes on smoothly and looks nice and even.
Color Consistency: Primer can help even out the color of the wall, especially if you're painting over a darker color with a lighter one. It prevents the old color from bleeding through.
Priming sets up the perfect foundation for your paint job, making it look better and last longer.
How do I prime my memory to memorize any Surah?
Before starting to memorize a Surah, I would listen to it on repeat from a Sheikh whose recitation I love.
In the days leading up to actually sitting down to memorize the Surah, I would listen to it in the background while doing other activities like:
Driving
Working out
Relaxing before bed
Etc.
Listening to that Surah doesn’t stop the moment I start memorizing it. Instead, I continue to do so for the following days until I finish memorizing the entire Surah.
How does priming the memory help with Quran memorization?
Familiarization: By listening to the Surah passively, your brain starts to recognize the verses of that Surah.
Subconscious Processing: Even though you're not actively trying to memorize the Surah in the beginning, your brain is still processing the information in the background. It's like planting seeds in a garden.
Preparation: When you finally sit down to memorize the Surah, your brain is already somewhat familiar with it. It's like you've already done some of the groundwork.
Listening to a recitation of a Surah is not the only way to prime your memory. Instead, you can watch videos, read Tafsir, or learn more about the stories in that Surah.
Overall, priming the memory helps make the actual memorization process easier and more effective.
It's like giving your brain a head start so it's ready to hit the ground running when it's time to memorize.
